What Our Guests Say...
Beautiful setting and cottage
I stayed for 2 nights with a friend that I hadn’t seen in 4 years. We are both busy wives, moms and teachers and enjoyed getting away at this cottage for 2 nights. The setting is beautiful. The cottage was very clean, comfortable, and decorated very nicely. Although we chose to only do a little bit of sightseeing, there is a lot to do in that area for those who want to. Shepherdstown, WV is an easy 15 minute drive and has a lot of great restaurants. One of the owners met us at the cottage and gave us a very nice welcome. We would definitely go back again if we had the chance.
Cozy Cabin With A View
We stayed in this cozy cabin with a view for 3 nights after finding cheap flights to Baltimore and deciding to spend a weekend touring historic civil war sites. We were lucky to stumble upon this place overlooking the Antietam Battlefield. The cottage is cozy, we enjoyed the satellite TV to watch football while we were at home. Sandy & Brian are fantastic at providing recommendations of places to eat if asked. They also meet you at the house to show you around when you arrive. I generally prefer to just have a key code, and felt bad because we didn’t arrive until midnight, however they were very nice and the visit was quick. I would stay here again if we were in the area.
A Welcoming Retreat
The Lookout is a wonderful retreat. The view is breathtaking and the surrounding area is a joy to explore. Sandy and Brian are very easy to work with and respond very promptly to all inquiries. The notebook in the house contains an extensive list of the many restaurants and activities in the area. This house works for families, couples or a girls weekend. Whether you are staying several days or a week or more there is plenty to do. Save time to relax on the deck and enjoy the sunsets!
The Lookout was the perfect place to celebrate our anniversary. The house was extremely clean and cozy and the view was fantastic. We had everything we needed for a relaxing weekend away. Sandy was very helpful in recommending local places to eat and events going on in the area. We had fun exploring and would definitely stay here again!
What A Lovely Place!
Our family really enjoyed staying at The Lookout, which was very clean, comfortable, and welcoming. The views were incredible! The house was well-stocked, and the ping-pong table in the basement was a fun surprise. Sandy was very responsive, friendly, and kind at every step. When we arrived she greeted us with many ideas for things we could do during our stay. The Lookout is a gem! Highly recommend!
Loved the lookout. View was amazing, everything needed was there. Very relaxing. Enjoyed the ping pong table and information book. Nutters ice cream is the best. Close to Harper’s Ferry, Washington Mounument in Boonesboro, and battlefield. Thanks hope to come again!
The moment I contacted Sandy about renting the Lookout the experience was wonderful. Sandy and Brian are very hospitable and really make their guest a top priority. The house is a great home away from home. It was the perfect place for my parents and I during our vacation as we traveled around the area. The sunsets are amazing and the house is very homey and relaxing. I didn’t want to leave and will definitely be back.
The place was just breath taking….watching the sun rise and set–PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!! A MUST STAY IN MARYLAND…..if you seek tranquility and peace, this is the place to refresh from the hustle and bustle of the city lights. Sandy and Brian were great host that go out of their way to make you comfortable and welcomed.
Love, love, love this place! The owners were very welcoming, the house was charming and the view is SPECTACULAR!! My Dad and I stayed here to work on the AT trail (we hiked all of MD, and a little of WV), and then I totally immersed myself in the Battle at Antietam! I would highly recommend this home to anyone looking for a place to stay in the Boonsboro area!!
My husband and I recently stayed at The Lookout while visiting several Civil War battlefields. It took us about 2 minutes to KNOW that we had found the perfect place for our week-long stay! I can only reiterate what the 44 preceding reviews have said…the location is awesome, the view is gorgeous, the house is meticulously clean and comfortable…it was truly our “home away from home.” Sandy responded within an hour of my initial inquiry into the house, and couldn’t have been more pleasant or helpful. (Sandy…I know we would be friends if I didn’t live 18 hours away!) There were many little thoughtful details at the house that we so appreciated…from the binoculars and the citronella candles to the binder FULL of restaurant suggestions, maps, brochures, (even the audio CD’s for both the Gettysburg and Antietam self-guided tours!) to the welcome basket of coffee, tea and granola bars…I could go on and on. We thoroughly enjoyed the restaurants that we visited per Sandy’s suggestion (especially loved the Dobbin House Tavern in Gettysburg!). We enjoyed our early morning coffee and beautiful scenic view from the deck each day, with only the chirping birds and an occasional woodpecker hard at work breaking the peaceful silence. We were usually back at the house before dark, and the sunsets are spectacular…I took way too many pictures! We were also visited by some deer on a couple occasions. If we are ever back in this area, we wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else! Thanks so much Sandy and Brian…we were blessed by your lovely cottage and warm hospitality
My brother and I stayed in The Lookout during our trip in April to retrace our grandfather’s journey during the Civil War. The location is ideal. Very quiet and well located minutes from Antietam. The Lookout has an amazing view from the kitchen and deck looking West over Antietam. Comfortable, quiet, meticulously clean. Well managed, welcoming, convenient to battlefields and villages. I would definitely recommend The Lookout to family and friends.
Bicycling The C & O Towpath
My husband and I stayed at The Lookout while enjoying a bicycling trip to the C & O Towpath this past fall. It was a wonderful private, and quiet spot. We had short drives to access the Towpath from there. Although we had some liquid sunshine during our stay, we biked everyday but two and covered 150 miles on the trail. On one those liquid sunshine days, we throughly enjoyed the comfortable furnishings and the spectacular view as we stayed snuggled inside. We also visited and did some hiking at Harper’s Ferry. Sandy & Brian were so nice and helpful. We recommend staying there.
You Won’t Be Disappointed
I’m tempted to give “The Lookout” a poor rating so that I can keep this special place to myself! However, I’m resisting temptation and giving it the rating it deserves – excellent! “The Lookout” is the perfect place to relax, sightsee, enjoy friends and family and reflect upon the tremendous sacrifice that so many have paid and continue to pay for our freedom. You won’t be disappointed in The Lookout!”
Incredible Sunsets Over Antietam
After spending too much time searching for what would be the “ideal” spot to shelter for a civil war history tour, and seeing the “Lookout” early on in that search, I quickly realized upon arrival that the right choice had been made, and I had wasted a lot of time. Upon stepping out of the car in the driveway on a perfect day, it was just one of those Zen moments. Spectacular view for miles in an authentic setting. The property itself is immaculate, inside and out. Plenty of room to spread out and relax inside, clean and well maintained. You’ll probably spend most of your time, when not roaming the countryside, on the large deck overlooking the battlefield for many more Zen moments. This placed made our trip and tied everything we needed into one convenient package. 100 stars in my book, you WILL NOT be disappointed. Sandy and Brian, Thank you. P.S. I highly recommend the “Black Hog” BBQ joint just inside of Fredrick for some of the best BBQ I’ve tasted, seriously, and there’s a pub in Harpers ferry… sorry can’t quite remember the name of that one.
Your Idaho Friends
This was our second stay and it was just as we left it a year before. We felt as if was our own home, it is so comfortable. Sandy and Brian have thought of everything right down to the soft towels and silky sheets. You can’t come at a off season, for no matter when you come the area has so much to offer. This cottage is centered in the middle of everywhere. We do recomend this home to anyone from a romantic stay or a family get away Sandy and Brain have it all for you.
Several of us stayed at The Lookout for a few days before heading into Baltimore for our son’s wedding. It was perfect! The accommodations were comfortable, the location was convenient, the house was equipped with everything we needed & then some; it was spotless (VERY important to our group!); & we thoroughly enjoyed meeting Sandy & Brian & learning tips from them that enhanced our trip. On our last night, we finally experienced a sunset like had been mentioned/promised in other reviews. Thanks for helping to make the beginning of our trip memorable. We owe you a Mirror Pond, Brian!
Quiet With Quite A View!
The Lookout offers tasteful and comfortable accommodations with a great view of the battlefields and beyond. Each night provided a different “painted sky” through the patio doors. The owners take excellent care of the property and provide a comfy place to relax and enjoy your stay.
The Lookout, as it’s owners Sandy and Brian, reflects a dedication to a peaceful, historical venue complete with go-home soulful surroundings. Every consideration is covered. We felt so welcome and secure from the first moment we arrived. Their attention to detail is unmatched. In addition, surrounding historical villages make you want to never leave. We could not have been more satisfied.
Perfect Weekend Escape
Two of my friends and I stayed at The Lookout in early March. We were looking for an escape from the city and some time to catch up and relax. The Lookout provided exactly what we needed. Sandy responded very soon after I sent the rental inquiry and was easy to work with throughout the rental process. She provided us with clear directions to the house and was waiting when we got there. She explained everything about the house, and anything she didn’t cover was included in the extensive guide book she’s put together. The house had a lot of space to relax, and the porch looked lovely. However, it was a bit too cold for us to spend much time outside. We did have a fun time playing ping pong in the basement, and the house has a nice entertainment system for watching DVDs. I would definitely stay there again.
My husband and I were down during the snow storm of 2014, 2-14. Sandy and Brian showed concern for us during the storm. Sandy had called to see if we were ok and they made sure that the driveway was plowed out for us. Sandy was gracious to allow us to come down a day early so we could beat the snow. Once we arrived we were not worried about getting out because the cottage had everything that we need and we got to be couch potatoes for a couple of days. The view was BEAUTIFUL with the snow on the trees!!! We did have a chance to get out and see some things on Friday, not everything was opened but now we have a better idea of where to go for the next time that we come down and we WILL be back. Thank you again to Sandy and Brian for being gracious enough to open their home to us!!!
Our Home Away From Home
My husband and I recently rented “The Lookout” for a week in November. It was our first “vrbo” rental and we couldn’t have been happier with our experience. First of all, the cottage is in pristine condition. We joked that it was so clean that we could have eaten off of the floors. Every comfort of home was thought of and provided. The beds were extremely comfortable affording us very restful nights. The living room with flat screen TV was cozy and the leather couches just the right touch especially the loveseat that converted into a lounge chair. And then, there is the spectacular view of Antietam Battlefield. Anyone with any knowledge of Civil War history will understand that they are looking at a very hallowed place. My husband is a huge Civil War buff and was imagining himself as one of the generals standing on the very spot where the cottage is located, observing the battle below. I’m sure that in the warmer weather being able to sit out on the very large deck must be spectacular. The owners, Sandy and Brian were very warm and welcoming and just couldn’t have been nicer. We just can’t stop talking about this place to our friends and look forward to returning. Yes, we would highly recommend “The Lookout”!!!
A Home Away From Home
My husband and I had the most romantic vacation ever in the cabin. The sunsets are like no other. This cabin is so well stocked that you should take an inventory before heading out to buy the things you think you might need. Sandy has thought of everything from the soap for laundry to razors and don’t for get the eye make up removers. You will love how close it is to everything you may want to see while you are on the east coast. This is truly a home away from home, and it is settled in the forest with no noise except nature. We will be coming back in a couple of years, and when we do we will stay in this cabin, if you can call it a cabin. Even when it rained it was truly magical! Thank you so much for you personal touch with the welcome basket and honey we loved it so much.
Perfect Family Getaway!
My husband and I and our two daughters (ages 9 and 14) stayed at The Lookout for four nights. The past reviewers have said it all–immaculately clean, comfortable, and with everything you’d need for a relaxed getaway for four. We had breakfast and all our dinners at the cabin, and the kitchen is well-stocked with all the utensils you might need. Sandy and her husband Brian met us at the cabin and were very helpful with suggestions of where to go and what to see. They recommended a terrific farm stand for fresh corn, and Sandy was kind enough to let us borrow a big pot for cooking it! Delicious! The view is spectacular, and the neighbors were quiet. We think we heard a coyote far off in the distance one night. Our girls loved their room, and the ping pong table in the basement was a huge hit for the entire family. The central air conditioning worked perfectly and was quiet. There was plenty of storage for our things, and the washer and dryer in the basement were very useful (detergent included!). We were not able to figure out the television, but with so many fun things to do in the area (tubing on the Shenandoah, hiking Maryland Heights, visiting Harper’s Ferry and Shepherdstown, touring the Antietam Battlefield, swimming in the lake at Greenbrier State Park) we didn’t need it. And if we’d wanted to use it, Sandy and Brian were always available by phone to help us. Overall, our stay was comfortable and relaxing. I’d recommend the Lookout to anyone looking to unplug, relax and enjoy a beautiful part of Maryland that is so close to so many interesting places to see and things to do.
My husband and I, along with our daughter and her boyfriend had a wonderful time staying in this beautiful house. It was exactly what we were looking for–a beautiful, quiet place that was not too far from some of the area’s Civil War sites. The view of the Antietam Battlefield is breathtaking and really makes you think about the sacrifices that were made there. The location is perfect for visiting Antietam, Gettysburg, Boonesboro, and even taking a whitewater rafting trip in Harper’s Ferry.
The pictures of the house cannot do it justice. It is very well furnished, comfortable and immaculate. Sandy is a wonderful hostess and met us at the house with a gift basket filled with coffee, tea, snacks and some honey from their own bees. We didn’t find anything that we needed that was not furnished.
We would love to come back to the area again and plan another stay at The Lookout.
Crossroads Of The Civil War – Civil War Buff
For some time one of my close friends and I had discussed visiting Civil War sites in the East, including Gettysburg, Antietam, and Harper’s Ferry. We sought a base which would allow us to travel to each of these locations within an hour or less drive. Fortunately for us we discovered The Lookout, located in Keedysville, MD overlooking the Antietam battlefield. This is the perfect location for Civil War enthusiasts touring the sites mentioned above.
The listing and photos of The Lookout are accurate. The owner’s Brian and Sandy answered every question we had concerning the property prior to making reservations including additional photos. They met us upon our arrival on Sunday and answered our remaining questions before leaving us to enjoy our stay.
The property was clean and well maintained. We prepared most of our meals during our vacation in the kitchen. All the utensils you would need are available. We used the gas grill as well which was new and clean. We used the washer and dryer almost daily. We used the TV which has lots of channels to choose from.
The highlight of our stay at The Lookout was the deck that overlooks from a distance the Antietam battlefield. With binoculars, which are provided, you can clearly see the Observation tower near the Sunken Road and the Visitors center. The deck faces west so you are able to watch the sunset each evening. Every night we saw deer on the property or next to it at feeding time.
All in all, we enjoyed all the conveniences of home at The Lookout allowing us to focus on sites which we had come to see for the first time. I would recommend The Lookout to anyone with a similar vacation in mind.
Darling Cottage With A Beautiful View!
What a great little vacation home/cottage! The Lookout is all you could ask for when looking for a place to relax and get away from all the chaos. The owners, Sandy & Brian, are extremely friendly and helpful and have gone out of their way to make sure your stay is the best. When I made the reservation, the owner told me all I needed to bring was a toothbrush…..and she was right.
Our first day there, we got lost trying to find a nearby restaurant. I called for directions and Sandy offered to come to us and lead us to our destination. It was like we had known them forever. Thank you both for making our stay so wonderful!
As for the Cottage: WOW! The pictures do not do it justice. First, let me say, we stopped staying at hotels 15 years ago and started renting cabins at State Parks, so my review is a comparison to what we have found in several states. The view on the wraparound porch is one of a kind. There are NICE lawn chairs and tables for sitting out and enjoying nature- a pair of binoculars and a fascinating book on birds is supplied for your use. There is a card table with chairs, with puzzles and board games for indoor activities. Have a young child? I noticed there was even a stroller in one of the closets! Oh, and I do not want to forget the Ping Pong table in the walk-out basement.
The Linens are very plush…not the ones you can nearly see through. The kitchen is stocked with everything you could possibly need to act live there if you wanted. In fact, after the first evening out, we bought groceries at a nearby grocery store and cooked most of our meals in. If you like to grill out, there is a nice gas grill and a picnic table on the lot. Hubby loved the wide screen television (a little too much). It was hard to get him off the couch some evenings. The Living Room Furniture is very nice ….not all lumpy and broken down. I found out quickly that the Love Seat reclined; very relaxing after a day out. The mattresses are firm… and again, no skimping on the bed linens. All the beds had nice sheets, blankets and quilts. The carpet and floors were very clean. For the first time EVER, I was comfortable walking around in my bare feet. All in all, the cottage is OUTSTANDING and in impeccable condition. I assure you, you will enjoy staying at “The Lookout”. Make your reservations soon….as we will be going back for future stays!!
I forgot to mention all of the sightseeing & shopping – Not to worry, they have that covered with a notebook!
A lovely home – very clean, quiet and comfortable. For the birder, it is a great location – we saw many different birds including a bald eagle. (bring a scope if you have one – I imagine this location would be ideal for fall hawk migration.) For the history buff, the location is perfect. The battlefield is close by and the views cannot be beat. We also visited the C&O canal park, George Washington State Park, and Mt. Briar Wetlands Preserve. Beautiful! Recommend eating at Blue Moon Cafe in nearby Shepherdstown, WV. Good food and brews – Enjoy!
The Lookout definitely lives up to both the photographs and other comments posted here. A captivating view of the battleground and mountains beyond, wonderfully friendly hosts Sandy and Brian, well-appointed home with everything visitors might require, and tremendous variety of activities in surrounding towns and countryside.
Most people know of the Civil War sites around and that is what draws many to visit this area. So history buffs can spend hours on The Lookout deck studying the panoramic view of Antietam. But it is only a short drive to other fascinating places: Harper’s Ferry and the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, the C&O Canal Parks, Cunningham Falls, the Appalachian Trail, and great small towns for walking, shopping and dining.
But the area should also appeal to fans of popular romance writer Nora Roberts. She lives in Keedysville, where The Lookout is located, and she and her family are actively involved with nearby Boonsboro. Her husband owns a bookstore there and her son recently opened a fantastic restaurant there. Try to visit Dan’s at least once while in the area!
So the area has something for everyone: history buffs, readers, outdoors enthusiasts, foodies and general travelers. And The Lookout puts one right in the center of it all!
Wonderful place to stay! Very Clean! Great location spot for JFK 50 runners. The view is amazing and relaxing. We will be back in near future. Thank you for everything:)
A Top Notch Place To Stay!
My husband and I were looking for a place to stay while sightseeing in Gettysburg, Antietam and Harper’s Ferry during Oct. 1 – 6. What a perfect spot! The pictures on VRBO are exactly what the house looks like, but it is even better when you get there. The owner greeted us in person with a welcome basket of treats including coffee, tea, popcorn, and homemade honey! Delicious! The Lookout is exceptionally clean, updated, and comfortable with plenty of space to hang clothes and store gear. The kitchen is simple and functional with all the implements needed for easy meal prep. Sandy has provided a huge binder filled with flyers and maps to local places of interest. She also is a wealth of knowledge about the best back roads and special spots off the tourist grid. Over a period of 5 days, we enjoyed Gettysburg, Cunningham Falls State Park, Antietam, Sharpsburg, Shepherdstown, and Harper’s Ferry. For groceries we shopped Weis Market in Boonesboro, Red Byrd’s quick store at the end of our road, and a produce stand in Boonesboro filled with local produce such as winter squash and local fresh apples. Of course the front deck of the home is the namesake of The Lookout. What an amazing view! We would recommend The Lookout to anyone wanting to visit this area as a great value, comfortable and safe place to stay and would welcome a return visit!
A Week To Remember!
What an appropriate name for this immaculate home with such great views! Brian and Sandy have thought of every detail to make us feel like “home away from home” from the welcoming basket of coffee, popcorn, fresh honey harvested from their own bees and sparkling grape juice in celebration of our anniversaries to the provided paper products and fine linens. We were in “vacation mode” in no time! We enjoyed exploring Boonsboro, the Grottoes Caverns, Harpers Ferry, and Antietam National Park. The self-guided historical tour in the quaint town of Frederick was the perfect way to spend a fall afternoon (especially appreciated the brick-lined canal that runs through the heart of this town and the Civil War Medical Museum). Nutters is THE PLACE for the most GENEROUS, delicious portions of ice cream. Our visit was highlighted by the trip to Cumberland for the Western Scenic Railroad ride to Frostburg. Shopping in Hagerstown and visiting local festivals completed this week of vacation. We so enjoyed the views in the morning, at sunset, and again at night with the twinkling lights. This was our first VRBO experience and we could not be happier! Thank you, Sandy and Brian, for the binder of sight-seeing ideas and for the warm hospitality.
Great Escape From Baltimore
My husband and I just came back from our two night stay at The Lookout. We like to find off the beaten path mom & pop motels, but thought it would be nice to try a rental. I think we found our new way of travel. It was great to hear birds and trees, not doors slamming and ice machines. I felt like I was staying at a friend’s house – with all the personal touches – quilts, soft towels, bottled water, honey and soap! This was the perfect place to escape and relax, especially on the deck. We can’t wait to bring family and friends here to explore the many things in Western Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. You can’t beat the price! Especially if you have a family. Brian and Sandy were great hosts and a wealth of information
Wonderful Home With A Beautiful View
We spent two nights here while sightseeing in Sharpsburg. The view is really amazing. It was the highlight of our vacation. Our hosts were very pleasant and provided a lot of great tips about the area. Highly recommended.
Don’t Pass This Place Up! PERFECT!
You CANNOT beat the price of this immaculate, beautiful home with a spectacular view!!! My husband, friends and I found many small towns to explore–Brunswick is wonderful small town (“Beans in the Belfry” & “Antiques and Old Stuff” are a must), Sharpsburg is charming & of course, we visited the Antietam Battlefield. We loved the Walking Ghost Tour in Harpers Ferry (the entire town is just the epitome of quaint) and we meandered around Middleway, WV to discover the town of “Wizard of Clip” fame. Thoroughly enjoyed relaxing in the morning with a cup of coffee on the deck just taking in the view. Received our deposit check back VERY QUICKLY, too. Thanks, Sandy & Brian for a memorable & very comfortable vacation!
THE OWNER TOLD US TO CALL ABOUT 15 MINUTES BEFORE WE ARRIVED, SO WE DID. WHEN WE ARRIVED WERE PLEASENTLY SUPRIZED AT THE BEAUTY THAT SURROUNDS “THE LOOKOUT”. THE OWNERS MET US THERE THEY WERE VERY FRIENDLY. NOT ONLY WERE THEY A WORLD OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE SURROUNDING AREA, BUT PROVIDED US WITH A SCRAPEBOOK TYPE BINDER THAT HAD ADS AND BROCHURES ABOUT RESTURANTS, SHOPING, AND THE BATTLEFIELDS. THE HOUSE LOOKED EXACTLY AS THE PHOTOS PICTURED IT BOTH INSIDE AND OUT. IT WAS A WONDERFUL WEEK FOR US AND NOT ONLY WILL WE BE BACK BUT WE WILL RECOMMEND “THE LOOKOUT” TO OUR FRIENDS.
Wonderful Vacation Getaway!
My first visit to Washington County, MD was 5 years ago and we’ve fallen in love with the area. This is the best place we have ever stayed in the Sharpsburg area. I echo all of the comments in previously posted reviews. The owners have gone out of their way to make this a cozy, comfortable home to stay in. Would highly recommend this property- so much to see and do in the area. The only negative could be the gun club down the road. The peace and quiet would be shattered if there was a gathering during your stay.
The Lookout was wonderful. The owner has thought of absolutely everything that you could need during your stay. The place is immaculate. It’s a great central location and so peaceful. We spent many hours on the back porch enjoying the view and tranquility.
The kids enjoyed looking over the battlefield and spotting the train through the binoculars. Ping Pong in the basement was a hit too. The home was cozy and quiet. We also visited the Crystal Grottoes Caverns just down the street and had a great tour guide. The local Library is just minutes away. The owners even recommended a free “star party” down on the battlefield that the kids are still talking about. The owners have thought of everything one might need, right down to the pima cotton sheets! Lastly, this place is CLEAN! Enjoy!
Perfect Location For Exploring The Battlefields
This property is perfectly located for exploring all of the Civil War history in the area. It is very clean and exactly as it appears in the photos. We stayed at The Lookout with another couple and with the two bedrooms and two baths it is ideal. The owners are very easy to work with and all of the extras means that you don’t have to pack things like tea, sugar, coffee and paper towels. I highly recommend this property and imagine that with the 100th anniversary of Antietam coming up in the fall it will booked well in advance. You truly can believe all the positive reviews on this VRBO.
Great Owners AND Great View
We absolutely loved The Lookout and our hosts couldn’t have been more pleasant—they thought of everything from fluffy towels to splenda. The cottage was immaculate and the kitchen was perfectly stocked. We even had a Christmas tree and a present of homemade jam and honey—thanks! I grew up nearby, but never knew about this wonderful ridge overlooking the battlefield and valley. The owner has made a huge notebook full of info about all there is to do and see within a short, easy drive. We especially liked the bakery over on High Street in Boonsboro–never knew it was there until now. We are already planning our trip back this spring when we’ll have more time to explore.
We had a great few days in this historic and beautiful area.
The house was clean and comfortable and owners courteous and helpful. Give it a try.
What A Wonderful Place
The Lookout is an immaculate home with a breathtaking view of the battlefield. It was cozy and comfortable and our host was wonderful. The place was truly a delight, and I would definitely recommend it as either a weekend escape or a vacation spot. There is a plethora of information about the surrounding area provided by our host. We will be back!
The Lookout Stay Was Wonderful
View is outstanding for those who are interested in the Battlefield at Antietam. Accomodations very comfortable and we particularly enjoyed staying with all we needed on one floor level. Hosts were very friendly and helpful. We will definitely stay again in the not too distant future..
Gorgeous View And Immaculate Home
The owners could not have been nicer. They met us there and briefed us on the house and made good recommendations about what to see and do in the area. The home was immaculately clean and just as described and pictured. Everything appears brand-new or recently renovated. The best feature is the deck out back with the gorgeous view of the Battlefield at Antietam. (We happened to visit on a day with reinactors and it was outstanding. Otherwise, would suggest a tour guide to bring the scene to life.) The downstairs of the home is an unfinished basement (super clean) with a finished full bathroom and a ping-pong table. Upstairs (ground floor) are living room, 2 bedrooms, kitchen and deck. The price is very reasonable and we recommend it highly. The sunset views from the deck were absolutely gorgeous. We also sat out in the evening to watch the stars. Peaceful and pretty. Thank you!
My husband & I spent our anniversary at the Lookout over the weekend. It was just beautiful! Especially overlooking the battlefield from the deck. It was very quiet & relaxing. Would highly recommend to everyone! We will definitely be back! Loved it!!!
We have stayed at many VRBO homes, and this one really delivered! The location can’t be beat – incredible views and close to many areas we explored: Antietam, Appalachian Trail, Washington Monument (great place to watch raptors as they migrate), Harper’s Ferry, Shepherdstown and much more. The home was immaculate, with many extras including super-soft blankets and towels, starter packs of coffee, honey and peach preserves, even soap and a night light! We only wish we could have stayed longer. Definitely worth a return trip!
What A Great Place To Stay
I had a couple of weeks off of work due to changing jobs and decided to pursue my recent revived interest in Civil War history. Antietam, Harper’s Ferry and Gettysburg battlefields were three of the locations that I’ve always wanted to visit and I decided to stay at the more central location of Sharpsburg. I was traveling with my two older children (age six and four), so we needed more than a single hotel room. I’ve had great luck with VRBO in the past and sure enough, The Lookout showed up in the search results with two bedrooms and two full baths. What a great place it turned out to be. The photos don’t do it justice. Both full baths were newly renovated and the entire house was immaculate. The owners were a lovely couple who met us there and made us immediately feel at home. The deck overlooking Antietam battlefield was fantastic. Listening to the wildlife and watching the stars (minus my usual city light pollution) was a highlight of the trip. Both my children and I were sorry to leave. I would highly recommend The Lookout for anyone’s stay in Sharpsburg.
We had a wonderful time staying at The Lookout for the weekend. It is a beautifully decorated and equipped vacation house with an excellent view from the deck overlooking the Antietam Battlefield just as the pictures portrayed. It is situated on a wooded lot making it a quiet place to listen to the birds, see the stars at night, and just enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside. The battlefield is very close by. We kayaked on the Antietam Creek for an hour and a half. What a wonderful, relaxing experience floating down the creek one afternoon. We saw an osprey, some ducks, and lots of song birds. We found the Burkholder bakery in nearby Sharpsburg which offered delicious baked goods at very reasonable prices. We also found a local farmers market in neighboring Shepherdstown, W. Va., where we purchased fresh produce to take home.
It was a perfect place for the two of us to get away and celebrate a birthday. We would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys getting away to a quiet place, and also enjoys participating in nearby activities.
Great Cottage And A Wonderful View
My wife and I stayed at The Lookout twice in the past year. The only time I saw a view like this was from Skyland at Skyline Drive. Of course, we had to spend a lot of money in the restaurants.
At The Lookout, you can cook your own meals and save your money for activities. The owners put a lot of thought into renovations ( I especially love the second bathroom with laundry facilities). I slept on the deck one night-it was perfect! I think we will book again for a long-weekend.
